1934年にゴードン・ジェンキンスが書いた「ブルー・セレナーデ」という曲が原曲。これをベニー・グッドマンがアレンジして1935年にレコード化し,今度はそれをジェンキンス自身が歌詞を付け「グッバイ」とした。以後ベニー・グッドマン楽団のクロージング・テーマとして使われるようになった。
